Why Consider Power Line Communications (PLC) for Industrial Systems? Welcome to the world of Semitech Semiconductor, where innovation meets customization. Our unique offering of optimized Power Line Communications (PLC) algorithms and protocols is tailored specifically for industrial applications, ensuring seamless and efficient data transmission. At Semitech, we understand the Industrial Internet of Things is built on a broad range of unique telemetry applications. For that reason, not every customer or application operates on the high-volume scale that drives most semiconductor companies. Core to our approach is addressing the needs of customers who may demand only 1K-100K pieces per year and provide the same level of dedication and expertise that any volume customer might expect. Additionally, we specialize in creating module products around our technology and offer bespoke design services to meet specific application needs. Join us in revolutionizing the way industries communicate and operate. Is PLC Better Than a Wireless Solution? Semitech believes that Narrowband PLC technology is a strong complement to wireless solutions. While wireless communication might seem like the go-to solution for modern connectivity, it comes with its own set of challenges, especially in complex building environments. Thick walls and multiple floors can significantly hinder radio signals, causing them to bounce around and create null points in coverage. Additionally, modern buildings often incorporate metal-foil insulation, which further obstructs wireless signals. When it comes to exporting products, wireless communication requires compliance with local country wireless spectrum rules. This means each product must be configured specifically for each market, adding complexity and cost. In contrast, Power Line Communication operates on frequency bands set by regional standards bodies around the world (such as CENELEC in Europe, the FCC in the US and ARIB in Japan), allowing a single product design to serve multiple markets. This not only simplifies the design and manufacturing process but also ensures more consistent performance regardless of the location. But Is PLC Fast Enough and Easy to Use? A common misconception is that PLC is relatively slow and complicated. While some of our algorithms may operate at slower speeds, their true strength lies in their extreme robustness over very long distances—think in kilometers, not meters. This makes PLC an ideal solution for industrial systems that traditionally rely on RS-485 or MODBUS and, with PLC, avoid the high cost of running cables throughout a building. With PLC, you can leverage the existing mains wiring , drastically reducing installation costs. Our advanced PLC SoC, the SM2400 , with its advanced algorithms, seamlessly transforms the mains wiring into an equivalent of an RS-485 or MODBUS network. This means you get the reliability and reach of PLC without the complexity and expense of additional cabling. What Kind of Speeds Are Typical on Existing Premise “mains”? The speed of the link is highly dependent on the environment, the load on the power line, the distance between nodes and the network topology. We support an assortment of protocols and communication schemes tailored for the specific need of various applications. The highest data rates are typically achieved in point-to-point applications, where the direct connection maximizes performance. When it comes to achieving high speeds, our SpeedLink proprietary protocol stands out. SpeedLink can reliably deliver up to 1 Mbps of data over distances of hundreds of meters. On the other side of the data speed spectrum, our XXR algorithm supports modest rates of a few kbps, but is the most noise agile algorithm and can achieve distances of several kilometers in a single hop and operate in extremely challenging noisy environments. It is the ideal choice for medium voltage distribution applications as well as EV charging monitoring. Does Semitec
