Siemens is expanding its AI data center infrastructure portfolio with a strategic investment and exclusive global partnership with Skeleton Technologies, a specialist in high-power energy storage systems. The agreement will see Siemens integrate Skeleton’s supercapacitor technology into its electrical infrastructure offering, helping operators manage the increasingly demanding power requirements of AI workloads. The partnership is particularly relevant to European semiconductor and data center infrastructure companies as AI deployments create new challenges for power distribution, energy efficiency and grid stability. It also highlights the growing role of supercapacitors in supporting next-generation AI computing architectures. Managing AI power fluctuations One of the biggest challenges facing AI data centers is the rapid fluctuation in electricity demand as thousands of processors operate simultaneously. Power consumption can change within milliseconds, creating megawatt-scale swings that place considerable strain on electrical infrastructure. Skeleton’s supercapacitors act as electrical shock absorbers, absorbing sudden power fluctuations and reducing disturbances to the grid and sensitive equipment. The technology could allow operators to increase compute density without undertaking expensive facility upgrades or waiting for additional grid capacity. The solution is designed for existing AC power architectures and retrofit installations, while also supporting a future transition to 800V DC infrastructure. “The race to scale AI is increasingly becoming a race for power. Data center operators need ways to expand capacity faster without waiting years for new grid and facility infrastructure. Our strategic investment into Skeleton addresses exactly this challenge. By combining Siemens’ electrical infrastructure expertise with Skeleton’s breakthrough supercapacitor technology, we can help customers unlock more AI capacity, improve resilience and accelerate growth in a rapidly expanding market,” said Peter Koerte, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and President Smart Infrastructure. Exclusive partnership targets AI factories Under the agreement, Siemens will have exclusive rights to sell and scale Skeleton’s products in the global data center market, extending its electrical infrastructure portfolio from grid connections to individual AI racks. The companies already have an established relationship, with Siemens serving as a technology partner since 2022 and investing in Skeleton since 2023. “Our partnership with Siemens brings together Skeleton’s innovation and Siemens’ global industrial scale to accelerate the deployment of AI infrastructure, unlock more computing power and improve energy efficiency. This winning combination gives us the strongest value proposition in the AI power infrastructure market, and we plan to become the world’s largest provider of white-space power systems for AI data centers,” said Taavi Madiberk, CEO and co-founder of Skeleton Technologies. Manufacturing across Europe and the US The companies also plan a joint innovation roadmap for next-generation data center power systems, supported by manufacturing operations across Europe and the US. The collaboration strengthens Siemens’ position in the AI infrastructure market, where it already supplies nine of the world’s ten largest data center providers. The transactions remain subject to customary completion formalities. The post Siemens invests in Skeleton to tackle AI data center power spikes appeared first on eeNews Europe .
